Here’s a little bit about our journey, if you are new here! If you know us, feel free to skip this part.

After leaving our old life in Scotland in March 2022 (it rains too much there), we travelled full-time for almost 2 years. Sounds fancy, doesn’t it? Well, it was. If you think that carrying overpacked backpacks in 45°C heat around streets that aren’t even on Google Maps is fancy. And that’s just 1% of all the fun we had! 😆

During the 2 years we volunteered in Italy and Bulgaria (free travel while learning new skills, anyone?), explored other amazing European countries and backpacked Southeast Asia. Btw, even our secret wedding was more of an expedition than a wedding. 😅

And, of course, we researched and planned everything ourselves, because you gotta keep the budget low, right? If you are like us, you’ve come to the right place, because we want to share all the useful travel tips and info with you!

Excited? Good. Let’s get into it so you can go on your own epic adventures too!

Remember: We are not financial advisors – all of this information is based on our own research and experience, so as always, do your own research, double-check the fine print and make sure any policy you buy actually fits your trip, your needs, and your chaos tolerance.

How much does travel insurance cost per month?

We’ve already shared our big, or more like small number with you: £32.69 per person, per month.

But let’s look at at that number in more detail.

Travel insurance for £33 per month

Here is what you need to know about our cheap travel insurance.

First, the math:

This was one insurance policy, taken out for 2 adults, travelling together.

It cost us £1,176.77 in total.

That means we paid £588.39 per person.

And since our policy was valid for 18 months,  it worked out as £32.69 per month per person.

Now, the background info:

  • We travelled full-time in 2022/2023 (that’s why we’re also going to tell you how much a similar policy would cost you in 2026, later in this post)
  • This was a worldwide policy, but excluding North America (but we still did do a 7-day side quest trip to the USA and were covered there, because our travel insurance offered awesome free bonuses like that!)
  • The travel insurance was provided by True Traveller
  • We chose the True Value plan, which is the cheapest of the 3 plans True Traveller offers

Why we chose True Traveller

Wanna know something crazy?

When we were planning our full-time travels, we researched 23 different travel insurance providers.

Yep, it was as boring and painful as it sounds.

The good thing though?

We found a company that was actually awesome, which is rare, since most people think travel insurance providers suck, right?

Well, True Traveller offers great features and prices, as you can see! You can read our full True Traveller review here, if you want more info.

And when we did need to claim? What happened blew our minds.

We wanted reliable travel insurance that would cover all sorts of adventurous activities (like getting whacked by bushes while kayaking the Mekong River in Laos 😄)

How much does travel insurance cost per month in 2026?

We told you how much travel insurance cost per month when we were backpacking full-time.

But, since we want to be transparent with you, we also told you that that was in 2022/2023.

Prices have skyrocketed since in many industries, so let’s look at how much travel insurance would cost per month now, shall we? (Mind you, we also had to adjust our ages in the quote generator, since now we’re both well over 30 – yikes! 😬)

True Traveller insurance cost in 2026/2027

We ran the True Traveller quote generator (btw takes seconds to get the price and you don’t have to fill out any personal or contact details to see the results!), with the exact same set up as when we were buying our full-time travel insurance:

  • 2 travellers with UK residency
  • Covered for 18 months
  • Worldwide coverage excluding USA/Canada
  • Already travelling
  • No excess
  • Premium for medical conditions for 1 person
  • True Value plan

Here is what the prices look like for 18 months, from March 2026 to August 2027 (we left Scotland in March 2022 to go full-time travelling and find our new home, so we symbolically picked March in this calculation too!)

The grand total for all of that?

£1,175.09

Yep. We can’t believe it either.

Not only did the travel insurance from True Traveller not get more expensive in 4 years.

It actually somehow got £1.71 cheaper!

And, technically, you are buying for 2026/2027, in our example, so that’s a 5-year difference, with no change in the cost.

So while everything else has gone up, True Traveller stayed the same.

Now if that doesn’t tell you all about what kind of company they are, we don’t know what will.

It’s not just that they are cheap.

They are also reliable.

Consistent.

Trustworthy.

Basically, everything you want from someone who might be the difference between you getting life-saving treatment and going bankrupt because of it.

How can you make your insurance cheaper?

Everyone wants to save money on the non-fun travel stuff, right?

Things like transport, data packages and, the most boring of all, travel insurance!

So how can you get cheaper insurance while staying well-protected?

  • First, figure out what you actually need to insure. People often waste so much money paying for things that are totally pointless to cover. We explained that here, if you don’t wanna make the same mistake.
  • Then, pick a good provider. That’s why we recommend True Traveller – they are great and yet offer low prices (that haven’t increased in 5 years!!).
  • Compare the different plans offered. As we mentioned, we went with the cheapest plan from True Traveller called True Value. We concluded this offered enough coverage even for full-time travel adventures. Make sure you check what works for you though.
  • Buy with excess. Wait what? Don’t worry, it’s simple. Either you pay more now, for your insurance policy, or you pay more later, if you do have a claim. We explain it all here.
  • Buy before you travel. True Traveller is great, because you can buy their insurance even once you’re already travelling, which most providers don’t offer. But it does add a bit of a premium to your price.
  • Don’t panic-buy activity packs. True Traveller offers 4 activity packs, plus a winter sports one. Buy just the basic pack, which is included as standard in the price, unless you 100% know you need to be covered for an activity from the premium packs. You can always add the extra activity packs to your policy later on, if you decide to do something more adventurous on your trip!
  • If you’re travelling long-term, like we were, buy travel insurance for your whole trip at the same time. For example, we bought the maximum length True Traveller allows (18 months), which meant per day cost was much lower, than if we kept buying a new policy every month. Plus, you lock in the current prices, rather than facing whatever increases happen, say, a year from now!

There are no promo codes. Or “delete your cookies and shop on a Tuesday at precisely 19:46” kind of hacks.

But you can still make sure that your travel insurance cost per month is low by being smart about what you buy and who from, like we explained in the tips above.

Travel insurance cost per month in 2026/2027

You know we paid £33 a month per person in 2022/2023. But how much does travel insurance cost per month in 2026/2027?

With the total price for 18 months of True Traveller insurance not changing from when we bought it, the travel insurance cost per month is working out almost the same too.

From our example, with the total of £1,175.09, the monthly cost works out as:

£1,175.09 / 2 (people) / 18 (months) = £32.64 per person, per month.

Now, this is the travel insurance cost per month, if you get a policy like we did.

But if you make just a few changes?

For example, if you:

  • Buy before you start travelling
  • Go with excess of £125
  • Are lucky enough to not have any premium medical conditions

Your total True Traveller True Value policy would cost just £969.64.

Which works out as £26.93 per person, per month.

Not a bad travel insurance cost per month, right? Doable even when travelling on a budget, since that works out less than £1 per day!

This is exactly why we don’t think travel insurance is a waste of money.

You just have to be smart about who you buy from (and what you buy).

What do you think? Were you surprised to see the real travel insurance cost per month?

Cause we honestly were shocked when we discovered that we could get the same True Traveller insurance like 4 years ago for the same price! Wild!

If you have any questions btw, give us a shout on our Instagram or book a call here, so we can sit down together (at least virtually) and chat.

Stay safe on your travels!
