Andersen Hotel in Copenhagen

Boutique Hotel in Copenhagen with Free Wine Hour

Free wine hour is just one of the cool perks at this boutique hotel in Copenhagen. In this post, we'll tell you why we chose Andersen Hotel in Copenhagen - not just for a trip, but for our wedding stay!

Free wine hour, giant teddy bears and a late checkout without an extra fee?

We fell in love with this boutique hotel in Copenhagen, and we’ll show you why you’ll love it too.

It’s called Andersen Hotel and we took a big gamble on it, booking it for our Copenhagen wedding.

Thankfully, we were right – the hotel was as much of a vibe in real life, as it promised online.

Here’s what we loved, what we didn’t, and whether we’d stay there again.

(P.S. we’ll also share how much it all cost us!)

Here’s a little bit about our journey, if you are new here! If you know us, feel free to skip this part.

After leaving our old life in Scotland in March 2022 (it rains too much there), we travelled full-time for almost 2 years. Sounds fancy, doesn’t it? Well, it was. If you think that carrying overpacked backpacks in 45°C heat around streets that aren’t even on Google Maps is fancy. And that’s just 1% of all the fun we had! 😆

During the 2 years we volunteered in Italy and Bulgaria (free travel while learning new skills, anyone?), explored other amazing European countries and backpacked Southeast Asia. Btw, even our secret wedding was more of an expedition than a wedding. 😅

And, of course, we researched and planned everything ourselves, because you gotta keep the budget low, right? If you are like us, you’ve come to the right place, because we want to share all the useful travel tips and info with you!

Excited? Good. Let’s get into it so you can go on your own epic adventures too!

Our Copenhagen wedding

Let’s get straight to the unhinged stuff:

  • We got married after 12 years together, in Copenhagen, as foreigners (Slovak-Scottish)
  • The whole wedding was a total secret. Nobody knew about it (okay, the admin staff at the City Hall and our ring maker knew)
  • Our only guest and witness was Mirka’s sister. We told her about the wedding less than 24 hours before the ceremony, when we arrived to Copenhagen
  • We got married at the beautiful Copenhagen City Hall, which is just a 15-minute walk from the Andersen Hotel
  • After Copenhagen, we continued straight on to our “honeymoon” in Lapland, meeting Santa, riding with the reindeer and seeing the Northern Lights! (Quotation marks, because we took Mirka’s sister with us, so we’re still due a proper honeymoon!)

We spent 3 amazing days in Copenhagen:

  • Day 1 when we arrived, told Mirka’s sister we were getting married and did some sightseeing
  • Day 2 which was our wedding day!!
  • Day 3 when we explored the city (not a bad first day of married life!)

And the whole time we stayed at Andersen Hotel, which, for us, turned out to be the best boutique hotel in Copenhagen.

Why we chose Andersen Boutique Hotel for our wedding stay

Mirka speaking:

“One thing that was different on this trip? We weren’t completely budget-obsessed.

Normally, we travel as cheaply as we can – you’ll see us posting a lot about money-saving travel hacks on this site and our social channels.

But this was our wedding!

That’s why we decided to treat ourselves to a nice hotel. That was the deal.

(Btw, we still managed to do the whole Copenhagen-Lapland trip on a budget, despite staying in great accommodation!)

So, I went on Booking.com.

Used our 5-step system to filter accommodation (the system is super secret. Unless you get our FREE guide here.)

And the first boutique hotel in Copenhagen that got suggested at the top of the results was Andersen Hotel.

I clicked on it out of curiosity (the cover pic looked good plus the price was surprisingly low).

Everything looked promising.

But then I went to the hotel’s official website. And that’s where I fell in love.

You’re now probably thinking that’s where I saw the free wine hour.

Yes, yes I did. But there is more to the hotel than that – let us tell you what exactly convinced us that this was the best boutique hotel in Copenhagen (good enough even for our wedding!).”

Which room did we stay in at Andersen Hotel?

We originally booked their Wonderful Double room (sleeps 3), called Family Room on Booking.com.

At check-in, we got upgraded to Wonderful Mega Double, though, meaning we had 2 bathrooms!

It turned out to be super handy with two women getting ready for a wedding. 😄

Andersen Hotel
Andersen Hotel has such a vibe, and we, expertly, managed not to capture it. 😅 In our defence, this was our wedding trip, so we tried to be on our phones as little as possible!

Where is Andersen Hotel located?

Location is always one of our top criteria when searching on Booking.com, because we’re car-free people.

But this time?

It was double as important, since we were getting married (!!) and needed to be able to walk to our wedding venue.

You might remember from earlier that we got married at the Copenhagen City Hall, which is just a 15-minute walk from the Andersen Hotel.

If you’re also heading to Copenhagen to get married:

  • Give us a shout! Especially if you have any questions
  • Consider staying at this boutique hotel, it’s so cool and so handy for a City Hall wedding
  • If you need more help planning your trip (perhaps with a Lapland honeymoon?), you can always book a call with us and we can tackle it together!

Off to get married! Does this make us true car-free people, walking to our own wedding??

Andersen Hotel is located in Vesterbro – in the heart of urban Copenhagen, meaning it’s minutes away from:

  • The Meatpacking district with its cool industrial architecture, trendy restaurants and nightlife
  • Copenhagen Central Station – so handy if you’re coming from the airport or wanting to catch public transport anywhere!
  • The famous Tivoli Gardens (we didn’t get to go on this trip, sadly, but it’s always recommended as one of the top things to do in Copenhagen!)
  • Lots of other cool places, from sights to restaurants to bars. We only took public transport once, from The Little Mermaid statue, because Mirka’s sister said we were mad for walking everywhere and her feet hurt. 😅 (We are known to travel like crazy people, it has to be said.)

Why we loved Andersen Boutique Hotel

The reason Mirka fell in love with Andersen Hotel so instantly was that it has a vibe – you can even tell from pictures.

The room decor is from Designers Guild.

The toiletries are Molton Brown.

The bar operates on an honesty policy.

There is a sweetie jar on the staircase landing to power you up if you choose to skip the lift.

And oversized teddy bears hang out in the stylish lobby area.

These are the small details that we loved at Andersen Hotel.

It’s why we would recommend it as the best boutique hotel in Copenhagen!

But let’s talk about the bigger things, like food! Because we all wanna know about breakfast when staying in a hotel, right?

We didn’t have time for the honesty bar, but we did make it to the free wine hour – more on that soon!

Breakfast

We’re big breakfast people – it’s Mirka’s favourite meal of the day – so hotel breakfast is one of our favourite travel perks.

And breakfast at Andersen Hotel did not disappoint.

We won’t go into detail here, you can read all about what they offer on their website.

But we’ll tell you that:

  • The pastries straight from a local bakery alone would have made this one of the best hotel breakfasts we’ve ever had
  • The selection of everything was amazing
  • Even though we don’t need it ourselves, lactose-free milk options and gluten-free bread are always a sign that the hotel cares about its customers
  • Enjoying the breakfast in the stylish bar area next to a fire was such a peaceful experience – unlike the rush of many canteen-like breakfasts other hotels offer

Great, now we’re craving delicious Danish sweet treats!

Concept24 at Andersen Hotel

We’ll do something unconventional now.

Something you won’t see other travel bloggers do.

We’ll tell you to check the official Andersen Hotel website directly, before you decide where to book.

Yes, we make affiliate income via platforms like Booking.com, so we always hope you’ll book there and support our work (at no extra cost to you!).

But, in this case, we’ll tell you to do two things:

What is Concept24?

It means that you can keep your room for 24 hours without paying extra for it!

For example, if you check in at 6pm on the first day, you can stay in the room until 6pm on your last day!

It’s the ultimate late check-out!

The catch?

You have to book directly through Andersen Hotel official website.

We were looking forward to this – not having to rush for breakfast and pack on your last day.

Sadly, in the end, we couldn’t use Concept24, because we were taking an early morning flight from Copenhagen, so we decided to book via Booking.com, where the price was cheaper.

There was another interesting concept at this boutique hotel in Copenhagen though, that we did use (and it was so good!!). Read on!

We never got to enjoy Concept24, but we did get to fly to Helsinki and then catch Santa’s train to his home, so it wasn’t a bad trade-off!

Sustainability at Andersen Hotel

You could tell Andersen Hotel really cares about sustainability, even when it comes to small things, like room key cards.

They are wooden!

Interestingly, this was the first time we’d come across a wooden key card, but not the last – the amazing aurora hotel we stayed at in Lapland also had wooden cards!

You can read more about Andersen Hotel’s Green Key certification here, if you want to know more info.

What makes the hotel different from other places, though, is their sustainable Concept Green.

Concept Green

Have you come across this before?

At Andersen Hotel, if you refuse room cleaning, you will get a gift!

And not just one for the whole stay. One for every day when you skip housekeeping!

We were so excited to try this – let’s face it, we only get housekeeping to get more tea and toilet paper anyway.

Plus this time there were 3 of us in the room, and we were getting ready for a wedding, so there was stuff EVERYWHERE (despite us packing light!)

We would have felt absolutely terrible asking a poor cleaner to navigate that chaos.

So we declined housekeeping for the whole stay.

And we got to pick from 3 different gifts in exchange!

During our stay, the 3 gifts to choose from were:

  • -50% for a bike rental for a whole day
  • Bag of sweet treats
  • A DKK 100 voucher for a bar at their sister hotel, Absalon (right across the street from Andersen Hotel)

If you follow us on Instagram, you can probably guess what we picked.

The bar voucher, of course!

That’s how we managed to have 2 beers and a cider at the Absalon bar for just €2.68!

A pretty good deal, right?

And no, we didn’t run out of toilet paper, so it was all good! 😅

Speaking of free drinks, let’s finally talk about that free wine hour we promised you at the start!

Free wine hour at Andersen Hotel

We were already set on staying at Andersen Hotel for our wedding, when we discovered that they offer a free wine hour.

So it wasn’t what convinced us, but we have to admit, it maybe would have!

Because how many times do you get a free wine hour at a hotel??

At this boutique hotel in Copenhagen, you can get a free glass of wine every day between 5pm and 6pm.

And no, it wasn’t some budget wine that they’d been trying to get rid of since 2019.

The hotel served a selection of wines, such as organic Melea from Spain, and it was good enough that we made sure not to miss the wine hour on 2 of our 3 days there!

In fact, we were even a bit late to our wedding dinner, because we decided to quickly stop by at the wine hour on our way to the metro!

(Okay, we forgot about this metro trip earlier when we said we only took public transport once. Correction: twice! From The Little Mermaid and to our wedding dinner, but that was just to save time and Mirka’s sister’s feet.)

Should free wine hour be a thing at every hotel? We think so! Let us know your opinion!

What could be improved at this boutique hotel

The one thing that disappointed us at Andersen Hotel?

Their take-way breakfast!

On our last day, we were leaving very early, catching a morning flight to Helsinki to start our Lapland adventure.

We asked for breakfast to be packed up to go.

Considering how amazing the hotel’s breakfast was, we expected a really tasty, yummy package.

What we got was a paper bag with a juice box, an apple and a sad pastry.

Very disappointing and very surprising, given how great everything else at the hotel was.

Having said that, if to-go breakfast is the worst thing we have to worry about at a hotel, we’re pretty happy (as ex-full-time travellers, we’ve had our share of hotel horrors – and they still continue!).

But it’s definitely one thing we would improve at this boutique hotel in Copenhagen.

How much did we pay for the Andersen Boutique Hotel?

For our 3 nights at Andersen Hotel, we paid a total of €687.

Which looks like a scary number, if you’re a budget traveller, but don’t worry, it all gets better with a bit of math! (Can’t believe we just said math makes things better!)

€687 / 3 nights = €229 per night

And let’s take it a step further:

€229 per night / 3 adults = €76 per person, per night

Now that looks like a great number, given the cost of hotels in Copenhagen!

And remember, this is a boutique hotel in Copenhagen, with a central location, delicious breakfast and, because we can’t highlight this enough, free wine hour!!

What a bargain!

This is how we managed to do our whole wedding/Lapland trip on a budget. By finding gems like this boutique hotel in Copenhagen.

If you wanna know how to find great stays like this too, make sure to grab our FREE Booking.com guide where we share our secrets!

And if you’re curious how much our full trip cost, not just the Copenhagen part, but also all our Lapland adventures, check out our full trip cost.

Is Andersen Hotel worth staying at in Copenhagen?

Sorry, did you not read about the free wine hour?

Why are you even asking this question?

Just kidding!

We know not everyone gets swayed by a free glass of wine.

Here’s a simple answer:

Considering the quality of the hotel, its location and the price, Andersen Hotel is definitely worth staying at.

In fact, we’ve been eyeing up flights to Copenhagen just to be able to stay there again!

Not even kidding, we do crazy stuff like that all the time (we’re also eyeing up flights to Lapland, to stay at our amazing aurora hotel again, because that was another mindblowing steal).

So yes, if you’re looking for a great boutique hotel in Copenhagen, we would recommend Andersen without hesitation.

Nyhavn
We’re already planning another trip to Copenhagen. To enjoy the beautiful city and to stay at the Andersen Hotel!

Well?

Have we convinced you that Andersen Hotel is the best boutique hotel in Copenhagen, and you should book it right now?

Or do we need to mention the free wine again? 😏

If you have any questions, remember to give us a shout on our Instagram!
